Charles D. “Charlie” Marsh, 78, of Dixon, died Sunday, January 13, 2013, at Dixon Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dixon. He was a mechanic for over 40 years and owned and operated Marsh Auto and Truck Repair in Dixon. After he retired as a mechanic, he opened and operated Charlie’s Tool Sales in Dixon for another 5 years.
Charlie was born July 14, 1934, in Springfield, IL, the son of Ross and Elizabeth (Marsh) Wright. He was later legally adopted by his grandparents, George and Rebecca (Ash) Marsh. Charlie married Shirley Mae (Bollman) Helfrich on October 1, 1982, in Dixon. He served in the United States Army from Sept 1951 – Aug 1954, and was a member of Dixon VFW Post #540. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and being outdoors.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Marsh; three sons, James (Michelle) Marsh, Robert Marsh, Kenneth (Camille) Marsh; one daughter, Rhonda (Woody) Lenox; two step-sons, Scott (Julie) Helfrich, John (Alice) Helfrich; four step-daughters, Linda (Larry) Long, Cheryl Helfrich, Barbara Helfrich, Pam (David) Brooks; eight grandchildren; 16 step-grandchildren; and eight great step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; seven brothers; one granddaughter; one step-great grandson; and one step-granddaughter.
Visitation will be from 5 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Preston-Schilling Funeral Home, Dixon. Graveside services with full military honors provided by the combined veterans’ organizations will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, at Oakwood Cemetery, Dixon, with the Rev. Mike Jones, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Dixon, officiating.
