Gertrude Childers, 96, of Dixon, died Friday, August 10, 2012, at Heritage Square, Dixon. She was an assistant cashier at Montgomery Wards from 1937 – 1941 and then worked at Cooks Flower Shop, Dixon, prior to her retirement.
Gertrude was born July 6, 1916, in Dixon, IL, the daughter of George Harry and Gertrude (Sheller) Raffenberger. She married Virgil R. Childers on June 8, 1940, in Dixon. He preceded her in death on September 23, 2006. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Dixon and the Mother’s Study Club of Dixon. Gertrude was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. The family is very grateful for the loving care that she received while living at Heritage Square.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan (Keith) Zickuhr of Oregon, Becky (Dan) Cook of Fayetteville, AR, Julie (Don) Scott of Morganton, NC; four grandchildren, Brice (Tammie) Zickuhr of Edwardsville, Wendy (William) Wright of Oregon, Regan Scott of Sacramento, CA, Carrie (David) Anderson of Benton, AR; four great grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Virginia Muchmore, Dorothy Brown, and Pauline McAllistar.
Memorial services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Heritage Square, Dixon, with the Rev. David Spaulding, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Dixon, officiating. Interment of cremains will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Dixon, at a later date.
